Madam, – The juxtaposition of Dr David Vaughan’s letter (October 2nd) stating we have lost our sovereignty, and Anthony Leavy’s letter saying a national government without an opposition would be a disaster sums up the dilemma facing the nation.
The fact is the country is now being macro-managed by the mandarins in Brussels and Frankfurt, so sovereignty has already been conceded, and the opposition neutered.
With our present Government already sitting in the departure lounge, would it not be in the national interest for it to share all the relevant details and statistics with the Opposition? By doing so the transition after the forthcoming general election might not be so painful for the taxpayers. We need to avoid Messrs Kenny and Gilmore, having had a look at the books, saying our situation is much worse than expected.
In this context it is in all our interests for party politics to be set aside in favour of transparency, honesty, and co-operation. Regrettably, Fianna Fáil is incapable of putting the State first, so this saga will play out to a very bitter end. – Yours, etc,
