Madam, – In these recessionary times I was delighted to record on Friday evening last (September 3rd) Tesco Ireland’s commitment to transparent, fair and consumer- centred pricing in its Clarehall store in Dublin.

In an aisle of the supermarket filled with bargains and delisted stock, the following pricing of goods was noticed: Goodalls Whole Caraway Seeds (30g) reduced from €1.55 to €1.79, Paxo Celebration Wild Sage and Onion Stuffing (150g) reduced from €1.75 to €1.79, Gales Pure Set Honey (340g) reduced from €4.35 to €4.35, Lily O’Brien Sticky Toffee Pudding (110g) reduced from €4.37 to €4.99 and Linwoods Flaxseed/nuts (360g) reduced from €7.99 to €7.99.

Is it any wonder the consumers of Ireland are confused when it comes to grocery shopping? Needless to say Tesco’s so-called bargains were not flying off the proverbial shelves but the diversion of quirky pricing did liven up the monotony of the shopping aisles for me and a number of fellow shoppers on an autumnal Friday evening . . . Every little helps indeed! – Yours, etc,
