Sir, - As an Irish person, I wish to apologise to a large number of non-Irish nationals in relation to an incident I witnessed on December 1st. As I walked down O'Connell Street a fellow Irish citizen roared abuse - "Foreigners get out of Ireland" - at every "different" person he saw. I felt ashamed to be Irish and could only speculate on what those who were being openly and publicly insulted thought of the people with whom they may well share this country. We thought Ireland had progressed. Have we? - Yours, etc.,
Patrick Dowling, Sandycove, Co Dublin.
