Madam, - The smart new trains running into Heuston display the destination on every coach. Very useful. However, the displays alternate between an intelligible "Dublin Heust" in English and a mysterious "Stáisiún Heu" in Irish.
Trains in use down the east coast in recent years have been using the same enigmatic display format for a couple of years. One might hope that Iarnród Éireann would learn from such mistakes, rather than repeating them (though, to be fair, it has here avoided the baffling "Trains to B.A.C." format favoured at one or two stations).
Has no-one engaged brain and asked if this is the clearest display possible? Has no one considered visitors? Or infrequent passengers, who might have failed to memorise the name of every station in Ireland? If the message must be truncated, the essentials should be shown in full, not the trivia. Surely the name of the destination city is more important than the particular station?
Clear would help to attract and retain new customers. Obscure codes will not. - Yours, etc,
DUNCAN J MARTIN,
