Sir, - I would like to draw the attention of your readers to the dreadful state of Lough Sheelin. I recently went on a fishing trip to this once majestic lake and was horrified by what I saw. Large tracks of water were covered in a green, fluorescent slime which was up to two centimetres deep in some sheltered bays.
This is obviously the result of over-enrichment secondary to intensive farming and domestic waste, but fundamental to all of this is an inherent neglect of our environment. Unless the problem is tackled immediately, our inland waters face a doomsday situation.
There is little time left to avert the possibility of all our lakes being transformed into open sewers. - Yours, etc.
