Sir, - We must state our respect for the RUC and their families and our sorrow at their suffering and losses in the "Troubles".
The radical reform of the RUC into an impartial police force is the most important task for the British government and the Chief Constable in that order. It is really a political task. But we all play a part in the security of our neighbours and in promoting respect for just laws.
Mr Flanagan, who, we hope, will urgently address this problem, has stated twice in recent weeks that this will be a slow and lengthy process, that a representative police force depends on political progress. We suggest that the contrary may be the case, that political progress depends on an impartial police force which will inspire a sense of security among the people of the middle ground to build a fair society together. People who work for peace and reform are in a hurry. The never-never plan of delay promotes frustration. We would like to be well down the road of reform within six months. - Yours, etc.,
Mgr Denis Faul,
Dungannon,
Mgr Raymond Murray,
