Madam, – The appreciation of Declan Deane (December 20th) brought back memories of a gentle and kind-hearted Jesuit priest who broadened my spiritual horizon and deepened my understanding of true Christian friendship. I studied under his tuition at the ISE for the extra-mural certificate in ecumenics (1981-82).

He gave me the use of his study to sit the final exam. His pleasure at my graduation in Magee University was equalled only by my appreciation of his tuition. I later visited him in his pastoral centre in Portadown near the controversial Garvaghy Road where he continued to spread the Christian message of love and tolerance.

As a Methodist, whose founder encouraged us to be the friends of all and the enemies of none, I could relate naturally to Declan Deane’s core beliefs. He enriched my ministry and I thank God on every remembrance of him. – Yours, etc,
