Madam, - Ireland has produced only one Nobel prize-winner in a scientific subject. As many of your readers will know, this was Ernest Walton, who received the award in 1951 jointly with John Cockcroft for his work on "splitting the atom" some 20 years previously.
Born in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, Walton was educated at Methodist College Belfast, Trinity College Dublin and Cambridge University.
His old school is organising a day of celebrations involving senior school pupils, from both parts of Ireland, on the centenary of his birth, October 6th.
Contributors will include distinguished physicists from Dublin, Cambridge and Belfast.
As part of the celebrations, it is hoped to publish a small book of scientific, professional and personal recollections of one of Ireland's greatest sons.
We should be delighted to include some reminiscences or anecdotes your readers may be able to contribute.
Any such should be sent to me at Methodist College, Belfast BT9 6BY, before August 25th. - Yours, etc.,
DR T W MULRYNE,
Principal,
Methodist College,
Belfast.
