Madam, - The campaign to have the county of Leitrim reunited for Dáil elections, supported in the main by politicians, is an example of parochial politics at its worst. This notion that a "local" person can better meet the needs of the electorate is outmoded and wrong.
Co Kildare has been divided into two constituencies for a number of years and in the last general election not one of the four TDs returned for the Kildare North constituency was a native of the county. No one would suggest that the constituency is not well served. I suspect that most people in north Leitrim and south Leitrim are more concerned with jobs, house prices, the health service etc than what colour scarf the local TD is sporting in the early summer. - Yours, etc,
BRENDAN McMAHON, Naas, Co Kildare
