Madam, - I have been surprised by the ill-informed comments on artists' resale rights in some recent correspondence.
When the EU directive on resale rights was adopted in 2001 it recognised that it would help "to redress the balance between the economic situation of authors of graphic and plastic works of art and that of other creators who benefit from successive exploitation of their works".
Are the opponents of artists' resale rights now going to follow their own logic through and as a result campaign for the removal of the payment of royalties due to writers and composers when their works are commercially exploited? - Yours, etc,
ROBERT BALLAGH, Temple Cottages, Dublin 7.
