Sir, - What a relief to hear that Dick Spring has retired as head of the Labour Party. The longer he stayed, the greater was the risk that politics would get a bad name.
After all, who wants the leader of a major political party to be intelligent, analytical, articulate, incisive, distinctive, focused, determined, and unequivocal - not to mention principled and respected? The sheer arrogance of the man for thinking he could continue to get away with it!
Mind you, he had a hell of a cheek going before he was pushed. Now, what's this rumour that he might set new standards for Dail backbenchers? Just further proof that he's totally out of touch with what this country needs and wants. - Yours, etc.,
From Ray Cass
