Sir, - I cannot disagree with Bernie Woulfe (October 12th) that it would have been infinitely preferable if Osama bin Laden and his organisation had chosen to negotiate with America rather than inflict such a disaster on September 11th. However, having begun hostilities with the US the terrorists have brought an even greater calamity on their own people.
Let's not forget that the US is the victim in this conflict. Nor should we ignore the fact that when bin Laden chose to play with the big boys he has to play by the big boys' rules. -Yours, etc.,
