Madam, - Having recently read a glowing review by Tom Doorley of a relatively new Dublin restaurant, I decided to try it out. After what was, in my opinion, a bland meal and poor service, I decided this would be the last time I would choose a restaurant on this basis as I have had similar experiences no fewer than three times in the past two months.

Either Mr Doorley is more easily pleased than I (which I doubt) or the fact that many people recognise him both from his column and from his appearances on RTÉ's The Restaurant means that any canny restaurant manager will spot his presence and ensure that he receives the best possible service and food.

Mr Doorley is, of course, not to blame for this but it might make for an interesting comparison if perhaps every so often, a review written by someone not so well known was published alongside that of your restaurant critic. Or perhaps Mr Doorley could indulge in some subtle disguise! Until then, I shall continue to read his reviews with interest but I shall be basing my restaurant selection on word of mouth alone. - Yours, etc,

CLAIRE CROWLEY, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
