Sir, - Our Association noted with interest the article by Garret FitzGerald (August 9th) and in particular his reference to nett migration figures in recent years - 5,000-6,000 adults, plus approximately the same number of children, are returning annually to our shores.

Earlier this year we formed our association to bring these people together and to share our experiences of reintegrating into a new - and very different - society to the one which we left. It has become clear to us that the process of integration into Irish society for returned emigrants, while different from that experienced abroad, is no less of a challenge.

Dr FitzGerald also points out the importance of the contribution which "returnees" have already made to our vibrant economy. If a combined inflow of "returnees" is to be assured then some form of official encouragement and support is required.

Our association was formed in response to the needs which returned emigrants have. The more of us there are, the more likely we are to be heard. - Yours, etc.,
