Madam, - Capel Street has finally been given some recognition as one of Dublin's finest inner-city commercial streets ("Capel Street to be revamped under City Council initiative", October 20th).
Will the proposed upgrade cater for cycling lanes alongside the one-way road or will cyclists continue to be forced onto the footpaths, just like along the Quays and O'Connell Street (amongst others)?
Your report also highlights the short-sightedness of Cllr Emer Costello when she says she hopes Capel Street will attract "high-end retailers".
This of course would destroy the unrivalled diversity and character of the street as no doubt the wealth of charity shops, ethnic supermarkets, Asian restaurants, karoeke bars, adult shops, quirky specialist stores, cafes, bars and venues, hardware shops, souvenir shops, designer furniture stores, budget furniture stores, tailors and locksmiths, etc would no longer be able to trade with the associated increases in rent.
Or is this what Cllr Costello has in mind? Yours etc,
ISAAC LAWLESS,
Broadstone,
Dublin 7.
