Madam, - Despite all the huffing and puffing and dire warnings of severe penalties, including imprisonment, the Revenue Commissioners are still wearing their kid gloves when it comes to dealing with persistent tax evaders.
Recently it emerged that even those who had abused the infamous tax amnesty of 1993 were unlikely to be prosecuted. And now it transpires that offshore account-holders are being given time and offered inducements to settle their tax affairs.
All this contrasts sharply with the approach to the PAYE sector where every last cent of tax is collected without inducements, amnesties, deals or settlements. - Yours, etc.,
