Sir, - One of the changes being proposed for the RUC is the elimination of the "Royal" from its name.
Perhaps we in the Republic - particularly in Dublin - could set a good example by eliminating that anachronistic epithet from the names of such institutions as the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal Irish Automobile Club and the Royal Dublin Society (which, after all, started life as the plain old Dublin Society).
This State is purportedly a Republic, and the delusion that the R-word bestows some kind of added kudos surely stems from our inability to shake off the mind-set of the colonised. - Yours, etc., Raymond Deane,
Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
