Madam, - The trees that block out JJ Murphy's views of beautiful scenic countryside along our major roads (October 17th) are a source of cover and food to countless small birds and mammals - a source that is getting ever more important as hedgerows disappear. While driving on the M4 recently I saw a kestrel hovering over the verge, waiting to strike. It was a more pleasing sight to me than any number of green fields and stone walls. - Yours, etc,
