Sir, - Does the ordinary man or woman in the street know that shortly, when they drive from Dublin to Cork or vice versa, they will no longer be able to see the Rock of Cashel? Ireland's most important historical monument will be hidden away from view.
South Tipperary County Council is bypassing Cashel and has chosen a route east of the town, which will mean that the Rock; will no longer be visible. They say they have chosen this route as it will cost £1 million less, and be 26 seconds shorter, than a route west of the town, for which the overwhelming majority of the people of Cashel voted and which would give a magnificent view of the Rock.
If money is the reason, the Government should grant aid the project. The financial gain in the future would definitely outweigh this argument, and it would insure that the advantage which the Rock of Cashel would bring to South Tipperary would be maximised. I appeal to people to protest to "South Tipperary County Council, and ask it to review the decision.
Yours, etc.,
Main Street,
Cashel,
Co Tipperary.
