Madam, - Vincent Browne (Opinion, November 7th) states that, in a well publicised recent case, Roma Gypsies were "forced to live for months on a roundabout in the middle of a busy road". Can he explain exactly how this force was applied? Were they corralled into this roundabout by the police? Were they prevented from leaving when they found alternative accommodation?
My understanding is that the group in question set up camp on this roundabout of their own volition when they could not find work in Ireland. It was unquestionably an unfortunate incident, but does Mr Browne imply that the State should have a job and a house waiting for every foreign national who arrives on our shores in order to prevent a recurrence? - Yours, etc,
GAVIN ROSS, Allendale Walk, Dublin 15.
