Sir, – Having completed my own research and educated myself on the issues, I have just cast my California absentee ballot for the upcoming election in the United States of America. It took me four minutes to complete the ballot. I cast a vote for the following offices: The president of the United States, the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, a member of the State Assembly, a trusteee on the State Center Community College District, and 14 referendums. The referendums ranged from the abolishment of the death penalty to an increase in taxes to support local libraries.
Yet there are those in elected office in this country and in academia who state that the Irish people should not be given more than one referendum on the ballot because it gets too complicated for the general public if there is more than one referendum on the ballot. This is not an Irish solution – it is ignorance in its purest from. – Yours, etc,
