Sir, - Charlie Bird's comments (July 10th) were timely and balanced, and represented a more useful contribution to the debate on public service broadcasting debate than many others from his colleagues in Montrose over recent days.

The pity, however, is that he included a reference to this absurd notion known as "Dublin 4". As someone who had the honour to represent the real Dublin 4 on Dublin City Council for several years, I feel it would be nice if some day the real community of the area was allowed a voice at all.

In my experience RTE has a singular view of our capital city and that is usually to ignore it. One of the positives in the RTE submission to Government was the proposal to appoint a Dublin correspondent. I trust this will not be one of the measures dropped because of the mean-spirited, petty and vindictive decision of the Minister on the licence fee.

Notwithstanding previous comments, I believe in public service broadcasting and that RTE, if it bothered, is still the best placed to deliver it. - Yours, etc.,
