Sir, - TV3 provides a breakfast-time TV programme with no licence fee. RTE does not. Eamon Dunphy on Today FM provides an impartial evening radio news programme with no licence fee.
RTE requires a huge body of staff to produce an inferior (and an often less than impartial) evening news programme.
RTE spends a huge amount of time and money on sports and soaps that are also shown on the UK terrestrial channels. Perhaps the Government should ensure that everyone in the country has access to these channels, scrap RTE and the licence fee, and allow other independent Irish channels to fill the small vacuum left. - Yours, etc.,
Daniel Plewman, Ballytore, Athy, Co Kildare.
