Madam, - John O'Sullivan's piece on Victor Costello (April 1st) was an excellent tribute to one of the finest servants of Leinster and Irish rugby in recent vintage.

If I have one criticism of the article it is that Mr O'Sullivan failed to point out that Costello was deprived of at least 20 international caps by the bizarre selection policy of Eddie O'Sullivan. Costello's ability to break the gain-line was one of the most lethal instruments available to the Irish international team. But sadly O'Sullivan, whose tactical appreciation is not thankfully being seriously questioned, did not fully recognise Costello's unique talent in this vital area of the game. - Yours, etc.,
