Madam, - Noel Whelan (Opinion April 21st) claims that Ryanair's recent advertisements are damaging to the democratic process. It is an unusual approach by any barrister to suggest that freedom of speech is damaging to the political process.

Since the advertisements highlighted four specific promises in the "Agreed Programme for Government", which this Government has broken, perhaps it is the message, rather than the messenger, that is damaging to the democratic process.

If Bertie Ahern's Government had kept its promise and delivered a competing second terminal at Dublin Airport, there would be no advertisements. Surely the public - many of whom are stuck in long queues and congested facilities at Dublin Airport - are entitled to be reminded that you can't trust this Government on transport. - Yours, etc,

PETER SHERRARD, Head of Communications, Ryanair, Dublin Airport.
