Madam, - Both your Editorial of November 5th and Mark Kelly (Letters, November 8th) make important points concerning the deeper meaning of true equality.

I agree with Mr Kelly that Article 41.3.1 of the Constitution should be amended. However, we would do well to remember that, for each day that passes, the absence of any provision for gay equality with regard to taxation and inheritance law is damaging the lives, security and happiness of thousands of gay citizens.

The truly important substantive issue here is that gay people in Ireland be afforded these rights without delay.

Moves can, and should, be made towards redressing the deeper inequality enshrined in the Constitution, but such moves will take time and so must be secondary to legislation which affords de facto rights immediately. - Yours, etc,
