Sir, - I read with interest Dr William Reville's article (December 4th) in which he says "Science and religion should stick to their functions." The article suggests to me that religion should be put in one box, and science in another, each to be locked up and the key thrown away. I do not agree.
I believe the truth is neatly contained in a short sentence by the Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who, in addition to being a religious, was a scientist of note and taught physics in his early years. He said: "Science and religion are opposite sides of the same coin". Furthermore, Albert Einstein wrote: "Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind".
