Madam, - How utterly shameful for Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to seek a blanket prohibition on sea-angling in the district without consulting with angling representatives (Angling Notes, August 27th). The Irish Times is to be thanked for bringing this plan to public attention.
To implement such a draconian measure on an outdoor leisure activity popular among local families and with immigrants at a time when the media are full of reports of family strife, childhood obesity due to inactivity, and concerns over racism says as much for councillor awareness of social issues as for their contempt for consultation.
I have fished in the district since 1976. I can only wonder what is behind this proposal now - a further private concern attempting to deprive the public of the sea as an amenity for all, or mean-spirited disdain for those who cannot afford helicopters and BMWs to commute to private golf courses or race meetings? - Yours, etc,
ULTAN Ó BROIN, Sandycove, Co Dublin.
