Sectarianism In RUC

Sir, - May I belatedly express my admiration at the moral courage shown at personal cost by W. G. A. Scott, who described in his letter (September 29th) the raw reality of serving in a partisan Northern Ireland police force, of, I assume, the 1960s/1970s. Such integrity and courage should be a beacon to politicians wavering on the edge of indecision.

Sectarianism in the RUC hasn't gone away. His letter should be read by unionist politicians who are probably poring over dry, turgid memos on the peace process, as I write. They should toss these aside and read his letter instead, which deserves wide readership amongst anyone engaged in the peace process and the future policing of Northern Ireland. I hope there are other W.G.A. Scotts in the RUC of today who will, hopefully, get better support than he did. - Yours, etc.,

Mary Sullivan, College Road, Cork.
