Madam, - The Irish Timesused to be notable for the elegance and clarity of its writing. No more. Flabby prose, in the form of hideous, artificial constructions involving the verb "to see", is spreading like a rash through your columns.
In the past week alone, we have had the European Commission proposing a scheme "that would see free fruit and vegetables provided to schoolchildren" (how about "provide"?); "California fire sees 10,000 evacuated" (really?); and: "Its move into the natural gas market will see it taking on Bord Gáis".
It's enough to make a man see red. Please stop. - Yours, etc,
RICHARD MURPHY, Vienna, Austria.
