Sir, - In "An Irishman's Diary" (May 24th) Kevin Myers asks, regarding the release from prison of those who killed the late Senator Billy Fox: "Would the good Cardinal and Clones UDC have been quite so active in their campaign if the victim had been a local Catholic politician and the killers Protestants?"

I cannot speak for Clones UDC, but the short answer regarding the Cardinal is "Yes".

I was, secretary to the late Cardinal O Fiaich throughout his years as Archbishop of Armagh. Two campaigns standing out in my memory which the late Cardinal conducted with others were on behalf of Willie Anderson, who was arrested in Argentina following an incident with a flag, and Gusty Spence who was imprisoned in Northern Ireland for killing a Catholic barman long before the Troubles began. To the best of my knowledge, neither of these gentlemen is a Catholic. - Yours, etc.
