Madam, - As one of a now significant minority in this State (the over-65s), I would like to draw attention to recent improvements in the management of stroke.
This condition, unfortunately only too common in Ireland, is associated with high mortality and long-term neurological problems.
In recent years a new form of treatment (thrombolysin) in acute ischaemic (reduced blood-supply) stroke, if administered within three to four hours of the onset of symptoms, has produced remarkable results.
Within the EU Finland has produced the best results to date through developing of modern stroke units. Helsinki is therefore the best city in Europe in which to suffer a stroke.
Now, comrades in age, how many stroke units exist in Ireland - maybe one, two or possibly three? Please vote for more.
- Yours, etc,
NIALL O'BRIEN FRCPI, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
