Sir, - Kevin Myers writes (An Irishman's Diary, July 22nd) that Ms Margaret Heffernan "has done the State some service" by instigating current events. Maybe she has. But by saying this, Mr Myers only draws attention to his colleagues of the fourth estate and their failure to report what was really going on.
The two other great scandals concerning the beef industry and clerical child abuse were reported first by foreign media, again showing up Irish journalism. So, Mr Myers, less indignation and more modesty. Some Irish journalists haven't earned the right to be angry. - Yours, etc., Joseph O'Brien,
Hermitage Crescent, Lucan, Co Dublin.
