Sir, - With reference to Angela Macnamara's letter (May 28th), I was reading with interest what seemed to be a valid point on teachers and parents teaching, and more importantly discussing important matters with young people. Until I read: "Unfortunately, in the face of moral collapse in society, adults can become unsure and afraid to find out or spell out God's truth."
Since when did the Catholic Church or church schools ever discuss sex with young people? I am only 21 and I certainly did not receive much "sex education" in my Catholic school, in fact I recall one teacher saying "you can skip that bit (in the book), you shouldn't be doing it any way", and at least one girl sitting in the room had had a baby.
Why does everything moral or "good" have to come back to God or the church?
I have had moral teaching from my guardians (non-Catholics) that was far better than the church's lies ever gave me.
"God's truth" has always been a cover up and a sham to me. Most of the bad teaching and bad experiences I have had have been through contact with the Catholic Church. It is for that reason that I, like so many other young people, no longer call themselves Catholic. There are only so many times you can let us down and push us away before we don't come back. I have chosen not to come back. Yours, etc.,
