Madam, - Is it that Dublin City Council doesn't care about the appearance of our capital, or is it ineffective at demanding funds from the Government? Whatever the reason, it should be ashamed of the state of our streets.
When we have the capability, resources and pride to build a state-of-the-art aquatic centre, why can't we do something as simple as cleaning our paths and streets?
I'm not talking just about the constant litter, but the grime of years that has turned all walls and pavements a dark grey colour. Even newly paved areas such as that outside the Gaiety Theatre look grotty, already with chewing gum dotted like bird droppings.
Maybe some of our Ministers should walk the streets of the European Capitals they frequent on "official business" and they will see the nightly cleaning and brushing of Barcelona streets or the machines which wash the street bins after emptying them in Amsterdam.
We must hope that some day, perhaps, we will awaken with a new sense of civic responsibility and pride.- Yours, etc.,
SIMON BLAKE, Walkinstown, Dublin 12.
