A Chara, - The Munster Agricultural Society views with increasing alarm Cork City Council's decision to compulsorily acquire the society's Show Grounds which have been an integral part of Cork's heritage since 1842. Any European mainland city would be delighted to nurture and help finance the continued development of such a 22-acre site.
The Show Grounds have been home to exhibitions and shows of all classes over the decades. Last year alone about 150,000 people attended 90 events. We believe that the loss of the Show Grounds would be as tragic for Cork city and county as the loss of the city's world-renowned English Market, or indeed the loss of the RDS to Dublin! - Yours, etc,
GEORGE W JEFFERY, Chairman, Munster Agriculture Society, Cork.
