Madam, – I read with dismay this morning (Home News, July 26th) of the felling of mature elm trees in Synge Street, Dublin 8 by Dublin City Council. My first reaction was concern at yet another probable case of Dutch Elm disease but it transpires that the 30-year-old trees were healthy. They were felled by Dublin City Council (without consultation with the residents) after a single complaint by a resident because of their spreading roots. This, to me, is corporate vandalism and health and safety gone mad! Maybe if I make a single complaint to Dublin City Council they will dismiss the management and staff who permitted this travesty to take place? Then justice would be seen to be done. – Yours, etc,
