Smoking And Health

Sir, - In his "Smoke Gets In Your Lungs" piece, (The Irish Times, July 13th), Brendan Glacken's humour rightly demolished the risible claim, by Gallahers, that there is no causal connection between smoking and lung cancer.

I think, however, that he missed the true humour of the situation, which is that the chairman of Gallahers, Dr Margaret Downes, is also chairman of BUPA (Ireland) one of the country's two private health insurance purveyors which, incidentally, operates a policy which debars the aged from joining.
