Sir, – I refer to “Button to Race the streets of Dublin” (Breaking News, November 10th) and subsequent letter from Declan Carty (November 17th), and wish to clarify the situation.

The current intensive paving programme is being carried out because of the extent of damage inflicted by the past two winters on the streets of Dublin. The work has been mainly carried out at night throughout the city. The City Council is very appreciative of the support from local residents and commuters who depart the city after 7.30pm, as removing the top layer of road surface in order to lay a new one is disruptive and causes delays to traffic. This work was carried out through the night in order for the roads to be open to traffic in the morning and throughout the day.

Dublin City Council welcomes such events as the Formula 1 cars in Dublin because of the boost to tourism and businesses they bring to the City. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL PHILLIPS,

Director of Traffic,

Dublin City Council,

Civic Offices,
