Sir, - Jason Boyd (October 12th) makes the common mistake of equating speed and road collisions. It is the misuse of speed that kills and injures.
On the issue of cameras: the camera that stops drivers speeding will never be invented. Punishing drivers for speeding and stopping them speeding are two different things, particularly when the punishment is a fine. Mr Boyd suggests pouring money into more cameras. I would suggest pouring a lot of money into an area of road safety that is grossly neglected - properly trained and professional highway patrols.
I could not agree more with him in his reference to the tragic loss and waste of human lives. - Yours, etc.,
Simon Cullen, Birchview Heights, Kilnamanagh, Dublin 24.
