Sir, - With all the focus on speeding, I find it quite remarkable that legislation to make car manufacturers fit speed-limiters, such as those fitted to heavy goods vehicles, has not been proposed. These would limit the top speed of cars and reduce the problem of speeding, particularly on national roads.Static cameras for detecting excessive speed would act as a major deterrent in built-up areas. The whole area of speeding is of course bogged down by double standards - for instance, ministerial, ambulance or police drivers constantly exceeding the speed limit. It is common practice for police cars to lie in wait for drivers who break the speed limit, then pursue these vehicles at speeds far in excess of that driven by the offending drivers. Who is breaking the law? With new technology in speed detection available, this practice should cease immediately. - Yours, etc.,From Phil McRoryPortmarnock, Co. Dublin.
