Sir, - With the increase in road accidents, I believe that, instead of fining motorists, we should introduce a points system similar to the one in operation in Northern Ireland. Motorists are allocated points for various offences, e.g., speeding, parking on clearways, bald tyres and other offences. When a motorist has built up 12 points in any one-year period, he loses his driving licence and has to re-take his test. I believe that the threat of losing their licences would be a major deterrent to motorists to stop speeding and thereby cut down on road carnage. - Yours, etc.,
Thomas Kennedy,
St Margaret's, Co Dublin.
