Madam, - I feel Mary Raftery's comments on St Ita's Hospital, Portrane (specifically St Joseph's) are narrow-minded, harsh and inaccurate.

Our two sons, aged 49 and 35 respectively, are severely autistic, non-speaking, and capable of serious aggression, both to themselves and others.

They had been in Camphill Communities for the handicapped, but proved too difficult to handle anywhere - including at home with us, to our enormous grief. St Ita's was the only option, the end of the road. To our amazement we found that, since they settled, they have never been happier or more secure.

The kindness, patience and compassion of the staff are unbelievable, and we count ourselves very lucky, as a family, that our loved ones are in such good care.

As regards straitjackets, these are used only to prevent aggression. Our younger son used to beat himself to a bloody pulp, and when asked, we gave permission for the straitjacket to be used for limited periods. This gave him such security and peace that he would keep looking for it and holding out his arms to have them restrained.

Our boys are delighted to see us on our frequent visits, but don't mind us leaving, which surely is the surest proof that they are happy. (And yes, they do know us!)

It is about time that these wonderful men and women who take care of our unfortunate and difficult children got the credit they deserve. - Yours, etc,

ANNE O'REILLY, Lucan, Co Dublin.
