Madam, - Some years ago I wrote to The Irish Times expressing my concern at the deterioration of St Mary's Church, Dublin. We were assured at that time, by the Church of Ireland and others, that everything was under control regarding its future.
Since then, the interior was stripped (I don't know what happened to the coffins in the vaults). The church then became a paint shop for a while and now I read it is to become yet another high-class "theme" boozer.
Apart from its connection with Wolfe Tone and others, this church was unique not only in Dublin but in the British Isles and is mentioned in many architectural journals, etc. Its fate is not only a great loss to the citizens of Dublin, but to future generations. - Yours, etc.,
