Madam, - Dr Joe Murray (March 23rd) suggests that "some method of tracing drink supplies to specific off-licences would enable us to identify and prosecute businesses which facilitate children getting drunk".

Unfortunately such measures are less useful than they first appear, as a major problem arises from young adults buying drink legally but then giving it to their under-age friends. On the basis of my own observations, reinforced by the disgusted reaction of foreign visitors, I believe that not only should off-licences not open until well after the parade is over, but also that pubs should close immediately after lunch (say, 2pm) and remain closed until about 5pm. - Yours, etc.,
