Sir, - The outrage in some quarters over the State funerals being given to Kevin Barry and others is both misplaced and illogical. The general reason for the outrage is that these funerals are somehow glorifying terrorism. Nothing could be further from the truth.
To equate the actions of these men with modern-day terrorism is to examine the actions and events of the past using the standards of today. By this logic George Washington and Simon Bolivar were terrorists.
But these men, and Kevin Barry and his comrades acted in the past and should therefore be judged by the standards of the past. To judge them by today's standards is both intellectually lazy and dishonest. - Yours, etc.,
Trevor Troy, Navan Road, Dublin 7.
