Sir, - In addition to the disinterment and re-burial outside Mountjoy Prison of Kevin Barry and other persons executed during the War of Independence, should consideration now not also be given to the disinterment and re-burial outside the prison of the several hundred other executed persons who are also buried there? These were persons executed for capital offences who were condemned, as part of their "punishment", to burial in unmarked graves within the prison walls.
In a country which has rightly abolished the death penalty for all offences (most recently and conclusively by constitutional referendum), it is barbarous that the remains of any executed persons should lie in unmarked graves within our prison walls. Steps should be taken immediately to disinter these remains and re-bury them in hallowed ground. Yours, etc.,
Edward Dwyer, Glasnevin, Dublin 11.
