Sir, - Nothing illustrates the poor state of our national theatre more than its programme throughout the Dublin festival. A Tom Murphy retrospective follows along behind endless re-runs of O'Casey, Synge and all the other sacred cows of Irish theatre. When will the Abbey become the focus of theatre in Ireland and not just a cosy retreat for the ultra-conservative middle-classes and American tourists?
It is interesting how Conor McPherson and Martin McDonogh are welcomed back with open arms when they have become successful abroad. When will the Abbey become the innovative, dynamic spearhead of theatre in this country. Surely that it it's purpose. - Yours, etc.,
Philip Boyle, Sutton, Dublin 13.
