Madam, - When the going gets tough, as it so often does in our chaotic modern lives, people respond in different ways.
Some stand up to be counted, as Steve Staunton has done all his life with courage, pride and dignity for both club and country. Some hide. Others run away. And then there are the slippery, political types who will do anything to save their own bacon. - Yours, etc,
TOM SHAUGHNESSY, Oughterard, Co Galway.
Madam, - Since the FAI made Irish fans suffer by appointing Steve Staunton, surely it would not be too much trouble for the FAI board to accept part of the blame by agreeing to forgo any bonuses and salary increases for the next four years. The money saved could help pay for a new manager.
Irish football fans have suffered enough thanks to John Delaney et al.
Now it is time for them to share in the suffering where it hurts most - in the wallet. - Yours, etc,
FRANK BLUM, Wicklow Town, Co Wicklow.
