Madam, - Many people complain about the number of SUVs and MPVs on our roads, but what choice do I have? I will soon have three children under four and their car seats will not all fit in my current, more economical vehicle. The guidelines for children in cars are clearly stated by the Road Safety Authority and current EU child safety protection laws.
Car manufacturers need to come up with a better way of transporting a number of children in one car than just producing large, gas-guzzling vehicles that clog up our roads and our atmosphere. - Yours, etc,
CAROLINE MASLIN,

Co Westmeath.
Madam, - SUV driver Stephen Gleeson (January 30th) feels that people are "sneering at [ him] from down below". Is it because of their elevated status that many SUV drivers can't see white lines in order to park between them? - Yours, etc,
MADELEINE FLANAGAN,
Claregalway,
Co Galway.
Madam, - Stephen Gleeson bemoans the "uninformed anti-SUV bias in this country". He may be right, but there are two aspects of SUVs about which, as a cyclist, I am very well informed. It is I, not he in his SUV, who is emitting the least CO2 from "down below", as he puts it; and it is I, unfortunately, and not he, who is many times more likely to be seriously or fatally injured should I get hit by one of these vehicles.
Mr Gleeson displays the arrogance which has done so much to create the bias about which he then complains. On your bike, sir. - Yours, etc,
Dr LORCAN SIRR,
